Tips for Packing Your Moving Boxes

Moving is a big event. It takes a lot of planning and preparation well before moving day. With so much to do, it is tempting to just throw whatever fits into moving boxes and call it a day. However, it’s important to resist the urge to cut corners and be methodical about your packing to ensure that you won’t have a huge disorganized mess.

Here are some tips to help with the packing and organizing of your moving boxes:

Come up with an organizational system that works best for you. Be sure to label boxes well as you pack. Keep moving boxes organized by room and keep a detailed inventory of each box.

Use the proper size box for your items. Small boxes should be used for books and other heavy objects. Use a box too large for heavy items and you may run the risk of the injuring someone moving it, damaging your property, or ripping the box. Aim at keeping the weight of moving boxes under 40lbs.

Use filler when packing your moving boxes. Packing paper, blankets, towels, and other linens can help protect items and help avoid boxes being crushed in transit.

Securely tape bottoms and tops of boxes with packing tape. This will safeguard against items being lost or damaged while preventing the bottoms from falling out.

Fragile items should be packed with the appropriate padding. Padding such as foam, paper, and bubble wrap are good choices.

Don’t be cheap with your packing materials. Not having the appropriate packing materials for your moving boxes could result in expensive damages, costing you more in the long run.

If packing your moving boxes still sounds overwhelming, our professional Austin residential movers will help pack all of your belongings. We can ensure a full-service move by having your items packed up safe and delivered to your new home.

Where to Get Moving Boxes for the Big Day

moving boxes austinBoxes and bags are essential for moving – whether you’re using plastic or cardboard boxes, suitcases, or sturdy garbage bags, you’ll need to estimate how many you need and get a few extra. Boxes are the best way to pack things safely, especially when they are going in a large moving truck. You’ll also need newspapers, paper, packing foam and/or bubble wrap, as well as tape, a marker pen and if you can get them, stickers to mark your boxes.

Buying boxes and containers from hardware stores or supermarkets is a good way to get sturdy, reusable containers for your new house, but it may not prove to be cost effective if you’ve got lots of belongings. Apache Moving & Storage offers very affordably priced moving supplies in the Austin, Texas area.

You can also get free boxes from supermarkets, and sometimes from a recycling center or Craigslist – but when you're short on time, this may not be practical. Packing clothes into suitcases or bags means that they are easy to transport, and easy to fit into spare spaces in your transport, but you need to make sure that the bags or cases are sturdy enough to contain your belongings well.

Cheap bags are no good if you need to use two of them or they burst when you pick them up. Snagging risks are also something you’ll have to consider, as anything sharp might cause tears in your bags. Containers should all be stackable to get the most use while moving – or should be placed in front of your boxes so that your space is maximized whilst the move is in progress.

10 Cheap Ways to Pack for Your Move

cheap packing tipsWhen most people think of moving, they think of endless boxes and hours spent loading books, DVDs, and kitchen spices. Yes, packing is a big part of moving, and it can be one of the most stressful steps. But you can minimize the stress and inconvenience by following these tips for the cheapest ways to pack for moving:

Cheap Moving and Packing Tips

  1. Make sure you have good, solid packing supplies. This means sturdy boxes, enough boxes (grab them wherever and whenever you can – it is better to have more than not enough), ample packing tape, markers, labels or paper for writing down what is in each box, and some kind of cushioning material for fragile items. Find the balance between going cheap (cheap markers are fine; cheap packing tape will irritate you and can break when you least anticipate it).
  2. Tape up all electrical cords, and wiring or cable cords together with the units they belong to. This will save both time and money later on so you don’t have to be searching all over or heading out to a store to buy replacements. It’s common to end up with a pile of remotes and electrical cords, with none of them seeming to match anything.
  3. Find out how to move those appliances safely without spilling liquid from the fridge or freezer, scratching or putting a dent into your items or finding out they were damaged along the way and no longer work when you arrive. While you can pay for this service, with a little research and work, you can save your money and do it yourself.
  4. When packing dishes, glassware, mirrors, pictures and frames, be sure to wrap them all with towels, sheets, newspapers and anything else that can be either pressed firmly in the box without room to slide around. Bubble wrap is easy, but not necessary; use what you have on-hand.
  5. Leave clothes and items in dressers, bureaus or cabinets unless they are breakable. Merely tape up the doors and drawers and move as one piece. This will allow you to fit more into a smaller truck and you will not need to pay for a bigger size, or make that extra trip when moving with your own van.
  6. Make sure you call the cable and utilities companies with ample time and cancel your services for the old place. If you are transferring any services over to the new place, make sure the appointments are set for when you will be there for installation. This will help you avoid paying for services in two places at the same time.
  7. Don’t pack boxes too heavy. Boxes should not weigh more than 50 pounds; some movers will charge extra for heavier items. Make sure to label them well so anyone reading them can make a quick judgment about what the weight may be and decide to choose something easier to handle.
  8. Ask for help where you can. If you have friends and family, bribe them with food and/or alcohol, and have a running list of tasks they can tackle in an hour or two. It’s much easier to talk someone into coming over for an evening to pack your books, rather than coming over for the weekend to pack up the whole house.
  9. If you are paying for movers, make sure everything is packed and ready to go so you can keep your costs down to the minimal. Store all boxes on top of each other in a room close to the door they will be going out. Let them know beforehand of stairs, narrow walkways, or long distances from curb to door, as these may all affect your price.
  10. Do as much as you can yourself. Even just packing a box or two every night for a few weeks will put a huge dent in the amount that you’ll have to pay someone else to handle for you.

Money & Sanity Saving Tips to Packing Your House

tips for packing your house to moveMoving from one house to another takes time and money. If you’re like most people, you’re probably a little bit short on both. Never fear; it is possible to move without breaking the bank — or your brain! Take a look at these tips and tricks designed to save your money and sanity while packing your home:

  1. Practice the Rule of Triage. When packing, carry a garbage bag with you at all times. Be ruthless as you go through your closets and drawers, bookshelves and garage. Just because you own a snowblower doesn’t mean you need to move a snowblower — particularly if you are moving from the Texas Panhandle to Austin! Get rid of stuff that hasn’t seen the light of day in at least six months. Also toss anything broken, unsightly, or unloved. This is the perfect time to rid yourself of Aunt Edna’s teakettle, or the hand-me-down clothes your kids wouldn’t wear. If questioned, you can always claim it got lost in the move.
  2. Be Organized. Even if you aren’t naturally organized, now is the time to pull on all your inner resources. You can organize your boxes a few different ways. The two most efficient are:
*By room where the items came from (Bob’s Man Cave; Sally’s Craft Room)
*By type of item (Dishes, Knick-Knacks, Blankets, Toys)
Either way will work; it’s just a matter of personal preference. If you are not going to be on-hand to unpack at the other end, you may want to note where the boxes are going, rather than what they are.
  3. Call in a Favor (or 10). If you are low on income and short on time but have a big packing job to do, call some friends and family to see who is willing to help you tackle things. Be nice and feed them. Pizza and beer will go a long way to getting free labor. Decide if you would like to tackle each room together, or if not, make up a list of the items in each room to pack together or get rid of. Don’t leave anything to chance if you’re enlisting other people to help; you may feel more comfortable having friends help pack the garage or bookshelves instead of your personal items or underwear!
  4. Hire Cheap Labor (but only for the non-important stuff!*). Teenagers come with a lower price tag and are willing workers, particularly if you don’t care that they’re plugged in to their cell phone or iPod 24/7. Give specific instructions, as mentioned above, and don’t expect them to know that the crystal vase is an heirloom and should be wrapped separately.
  5. Label, Label, Label. You cannot overlabel! While it may be easier to just write “Kitchen” or “Master Bedroom” on the top of a box, this can get frustrating when you have hundreds of boxes and can’t remember where you put your two-year-old’s favorite stuffed animal or your husband’s ties for the meeting with the new boss in the morning. Also make sure to properly label things that have liquids in them, books, clothing, etc It makes unpacking a whole lot less stressful, and you’ll know exactly where to start when you’re trying to wash a load of laundry in the new house and are looking for the iron.

It’s like the old adage: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Put in the time and effort on the front end to ensure your unpacking goes as smoothly as possible.
