Top 5 Things You Should Know Before Moving to Austin

Moving to Austin Relocation GuideThe Austin Relocation Guide offers answers to the top 20 questions asked about Austin, the 4th most populous city in Texas and the 11th in the U.S. We’ve selected our top five from their list of frequently asked questions – what we consider the most important things you should know before moving to Austin. Knowing what the weather in Austin is like is particularly important, as it may affect your decision on what time of year to make your big move from other cities in Texas.

While we realize that jobs are one of the main reasons people move to Austin, there is also a wonderful array of things to do in town, whether it’s a night out on the town for dinner or live music, or exploring the outdoors at one of Austin’s many rivers and creeks or the hike and bike trails. If you decide that Austin is the right city for you, be sure to check out our moving services.

1) Weather in Austin

Austin usually has hot, humid summers and mild winters. On average, temperatures reach the 90s (in degrees Fahrenheit) 116 days per year Lake Travis and the 100s 18 days per year, with the highest ever recorded being 112 degrees. Winter temperatures occasionally drop below freezing, but usually hover in the low 40s or high 30s. Snowfall is rare in Austin, and precipitation averages about 34 inches per year.

2) Getting a Job in Austin

In April of 2013, Forbes named Austin the second best city for finding employment. Austin’s unemployment rate is only 5.3%, and employment is growing in the healthcare and technology fields, fueled by the number of quality higher education institutions.

3) Best Shopping in Austin

South Congress Avenue, or SoCo to the locals, features music venues, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and food trucks. The Domain, another great shopping area, is 700,000 square feet of shops, most featuring local independent designers. The Second Street District is lined with eclectic, friendly, and often eco-friendly boutiques.

4) Activities in the Austin Outdoors

Austin’s “Violet Crown” refers to the purple glow of the hills surrounding the city just after a winter sunset. These hills can be explored via the Violet Crown Trail System, which starts in Zilker park and ends 30 miles south in Hays County. Zilker ParkThere are three man-made lakes nearby: Lake Austin, and Lake Walter E. Long are stocked for recreational fishing, and Lady Bird Lake offers recreational water sports, as well as biking and hiking trails for land-lovers. Austin’s “secret stretch” of the Colorado River, near Roy Guerrero Park, offers fishing, water sports, and the Colorado Wildlife Sanctuary.

5) Nightlife in Austin

Nightlife in the Live Music Capitol of the World is dominated by–you guessed it–live music venues. There are tons of concert clubs throughout the city, one of the most popular being The Continental Club. For those who are looking for something a little darker in their nightlife, ghost tours of Austin’s haunted sites are available as well. Another great Austin experience can be found on the Congress Avenue Bridge, where hundreds of bats billow from below the bridge, into the dusky sky like smoke.

What is the Difference Between Short Term and Long Term Storage?

short and long term storage

Long and Short-Term Storage: What is the Difference?

Movable pods (long-term): This type of storage offers the convenience of storing items at your own pace. They also will pick up the pod (storage container) and store it at their storage facility. You can then ask to transfer it to your new home or location.

Storage facilities (long-term): This is the most common and easy to find. These companies offer a variety of sizes to store your items in. They have everything from a closet space size to a warehouse.

Moving companies (short-term): Some moving companies will offer temporary storage – such as vaulted storage – after they have picked up your personal items. Typically this type of storage is temporary due to limited storage availability, but it’s a very safe way to store your items for a short amount of time.

The main difference between Austin short and long term storage is the length of time you choose to store your items. Some storage companies will offer a discount for long-term storage.

Different Types of Moving Services

moving company services texasSome companies pack, load, move, and unload items, placing them exactly where they belong or where the customer wishes. Others may require that belongings already be packed, and they may only provide loading and unloading services. Unloading may be simply be off-loading the belongings at the residence, with no further placement.

Other companies may go even farther: they may pack the household contents, load the belongings, transport them to the new residence, and unload and set up the items precisely where they belong, to the residents’ specifications. Additionally, they may also clean the old residence. Some may even go so far as to clean both the old and the new residence.

A relatively new concept in moving is the “all-inclusive” company. This company does everything. They act as the real estate agency by finding the right house, then continue to offer their services during the entire packing, loading, transporting, unloading, and set-up process.

Where to Get Moving Boxes for the Big Day

moving boxes austinBoxes and bags are essential for moving – whether you’re using plastic or cardboard boxes, suitcases, or sturdy garbage bags, you’ll need to estimate how many you need and get a few extra. Boxes are the best way to pack things safely, especially when they are going in a large moving truck. You’ll also need newspapers, paper, packing foam and/or bubble wrap, as well as tape, a marker pen and if you can get them, stickers to mark your boxes.

Buying boxes and containers from hardware stores or supermarkets is a good way to get sturdy, reusable containers for your new house, but it may not prove to be cost effective if you’ve got lots of belongings. Apache Moving & Storage offers very affordably priced moving supplies in the Austin, Texas area.

You can also get free boxes from supermarkets, and sometimes from a recycling center or Craigslist – but when you're short on time, this may not be practical. Packing clothes into suitcases or bags means that they are easy to transport, and easy to fit into spare spaces in your transport, but you need to make sure that the bags or cases are sturdy enough to contain your belongings well.

Cheap bags are no good if you need to use two of them or they burst when you pick them up. Snagging risks are also something you’ll have to consider, as anything sharp might cause tears in your bags. Containers should all be stackable to get the most use while moving – or should be placed in front of your boxes so that your space is maximized whilst the move is in progress.

Moving Day Tips

moving day tipsThe day of your move is all about smoothly getting out of one house and into the new one – if you’ve hired a company, all you’ll need do is oversee them, or stay out of their way entirely.  If you haven’t, it’s important to have some physically strong family members and friends on hand to help you load everything into your van (and then unload!).

Moving Day Tips and Tricks:

Empty one room at a time, and ensure the cupboards (if they are walk in) are also empty – once it’s done, sweep, mop or vacuum, and do one final pickup then close the door.  Make it clear to the others helping you that sealed rooms are finished with, so that people aren’t trailing dirt into rooms that are finished and clean.

Moving day itself will probably pass in a blur, so it’s important to try to savor your final moments in the house you’re leaving.  You’ll probably have many memories, good and bad, there, and full closure on that period in your life is important, so that you can move on.

You’ll want to keep a couple of boxes, or bags spare and on hand so that you can catch anything that you’ve missed, that’s been knocked into a corner, or essentials that you’ve kept out for the move – the latter should be marked clearly so that you can find them at the other end.

Keeping your kettle, mugs, coffee, tea, toiletries and baby supplies (if you’ve got a small child) separate from your packed belongings might be a good idea, as is keeping any essential work, moving, utility or ID documents in a safe place during your move.  The latter will ensure that they don’t accidentally go astray, or are placed somewhere that you can’t find them.

You should take a final meter reading, and where appropriate, shut down any water, electricity or gas supplies if no one is going to be in the house for a few days after you.

Homeowners Insurance Advice

Home Owner Insurance Rates in Texas

How to Shop for Homeowners Insurance

When shopping around for homeowners insurance rates, be sure to mention any safety-related improvements that you’ve made, especially if it’s an older home. Simply installing a smoke alarm on each floor of your home will not only protect your life in case of a fire, it could save you up to ten percent annually on homeowners insurance.

If you have expensive landscaping around your home, consider purchasing separate insurance for it. Most basic homeowners insurance policies will not cover damage from wind or other environmental factors to landscaping. This means that if your expensive imported trees come down in the wind, your homeowners insurance policy will generally not cover it.

To protect your personal property in a rented residence, you need renter’s insurance. The landlord or property owner will have insurance to cover losses on the building, but not on the items inside your unit. This is your responsibility. Fortunately, renter’s insurance is quite affordable, and it’s available from most insurance companies and independent agents.

If you need to file a homeowners insurance claim, you’ll need to prove your losses. A good way to document your possessions is to take a video while walking through your house, describing the items. Then upload the video to a safe, non-public place online, so it won’t be destroyed if anything happens to your home. Scan receipts for your possessions, too.

Don’t automatically assume that your homeowners policy will reimburse the full replacement or retail cost of your valuables if they are destroyed or stolen. To be covered, they must be included on your policy in the form of an endorsement. A qualified appraisal must be obtained and an amendment added to your policy to ensure full protection.

Make sure you have adequate additional living expense coverage on your homeowners policy in case you are unable to live in your home due to a claim. This coverage provides funds for temporary housing and expenses due to an insured property being uninhabitable because of a claim. These living expenses can mount quickly, so carrying enough coverage on your homeowners policy can save you expense and worry should a disaster occur.

Clearly, you can do several things to get great savings on the insurance coverage you need most. Letting your insurance lapse is never a great idea. Make certain that you’ve always got enough coverage.

Easy Organic Gardening Tips for Beginners

easy organic gardening texasYou need to have some knowledge of what to do and what to expect from growing and maintaining an organic garden, especially in Texas where the weather can be extreme and pests can really “bug.” You need to know what resources are available to you and who can provide you answers as to what you need. The organic gardening tips below can help you get a start!

To maximize your enjoyment out of your garden, plant a variety of plants – plant herbs next to vegetables. By planting a variety of plants, your garden will be more exciting, and as a bonus it will be far prettier…plus it will help keep certain pests away.

When selecting bulbs, you should know that most bulbs are sold during their dormant period. Buy them as early as possible before they start to produce roots. Most spring flowering bulbs will begin to grow roots by early fall, and by planting them early, you will ensure that they have time to establish themselves. Bulbs will deteriorate if kept out of the ground too long. Don’t buy any bulb that is soft or mushy, or appears to be diseased.

When your summer blooms have bloomed and faded away, remember to dead-head the flowers. This means pinching off the flower heads. This will encourage new flowers to bloom longer next year, and it will also strengthen the plant. Since the flower heads have seeds, you can also save the flower heads that you have pinched off for planting at another time.

For areas with high alkaline, mix coffee grounds into the soil. This is an easy and inexpensive method to increase the acidity of your soil. With it, you will find that your greens and vegetables will be more vibrant and tasty!

Think about asking friends or family for cuttings from their existing plants. Many plants will grow from cuttings so that you do not have to purchase a whole plant yourself. It takes only minutes to learn online which part of the plant you should cut off to replant, and using cuttings can save you hundreds of dollars in landscaping and gardening costs.

A great way to keep insects and pests at bay in your garden is to spray your plants with a dish soap and water mixture. A mixture of one quart water and one half teaspoon dish detergent will kill off those pesky parasites. Be sure to respray every fourteen days.

As you have seen in the above tips, there is a lot of knowledge you can acquire before starting to grow your own garden and it is this knowledge that can help you. Do everything you must, in order to figure out what will work for you, in regards to your gardening needs.
